“The Lair”

Every visiting harvest figure carried out a spoken word and spat it on the palm. They marked it down with the thumb or index finger, etched with a nail. As the marking dried, it settled with the bearer of the name. The misread words are still more alive than the unread ones. When this arises, that becomes.

Imagine, something so inevitable – hashing markings out on the lip of hollow. Traced in the ground, they intended to prove, to text, weave and suture the landmasses. That would fixate the said to the done, focusing on the manner. In defence of the pre-verbal and unwritten, the unuttered yet so tightly incorporated, crimping on joints of limbs.

Jumping between geographical areas and time zones, the video essay revolves around places of respite, the lairs and their names. The filmed material intertwines with fragments of animation and graphics, as well as aural textures that act as a reflection of the image. Everything around is becoming a lair and over the millenia accumulated experiences, as well as the motives for action turn into a pre-linguistic state.

The work is accompanied by texts written by Helin Şahin and Ulijona Odišarija, a conversation with Gediminas Žygus, and an interview with an archaeologist, a stone age researcher dr. Gabrielė Gudaitienė.
