The artist mixes references to medieval, baroque, and carnivalesque traditions with elements from social media or television series, speculative science fiction stories, and the commedia dell’arte. Inspired by the TV genre of Korean revenge dramas, ‘Schick mir die Sintflut (und lass es regnen auf mich)’ uses fiction to scrutinize social injustice and classism. ‘Schick mir die Sintflut (und lass es regnen auf mich)’ invites you to an immersive experience: dance, music, sculptures, and the audience combine to create a participatory narrative. In his work, Genovese explores the realities and frustrations of those who are marginalized by systemic inequality. Initially, the artist uses the tools of parody and humor, drawing on the traditions of stand-up comedy. As the performance progresses, however, the satire becomes increasingly intense until it becomes grotesque and reflects social classes’ absurdity and brutality. Genovese’s latest work takes up the theme of revenge to achieve social justice. It is also a critique of contemporary identity politics.
