“Out of her third eye emerged a perfect holographic render of my face,
stretching itself over her features until it fit seamlessly.”
Shipton is pleased to present our first duo exhibition, Mirror Stage, featuring work from Bora Akinciturk and Ella Fleck. Join us on Thursday, 22nd June from 6-9pm for an opening reception.
Mirror Stage is an exhibition of painting, sculpture and text that explores narratives of selfhood, spirituality and primary narcissism through contemporary image making and reflections.
In psychoanalytic theory, Jacques Lacan’s Mirror Stage explores the formation of human identity and the relationship between the self and external reality. According to Lacan, a child experiences a moment of recognition and identification when they encounter their own reflection in a mirror.
This visual encounter engenders a sense of unity and wholeness, establishing the first glimpses of a coherent self and signifies a critical juncture in the development of the ego, where the individual begins to navigate the complexities of self-perception, social expectations, and the perpetual desire for recognition.
