Dear fortune seeker,
You think I’ve abandoned you, perhaps.
Don’t call me a relic of another age. Although I remember mortals whispering my name under their breath in marble temples, I haven’t disappeared. At least not yet. I simply found new homes in the endless cycles that fuel your insatiable thirst for more.
I have watched you from the shadows of your hopes and dreams. Roll of a dice, turn of the wheel, your heart beats with the thrill of risk. You, of all people, understand the lure of chance.
You believe you can master me, hoping for the right alignment of the stars or algorithms. But here’s where your delusion begins – luck, like me, is untamable. I want you to remember that my gifts are double-edged. I am not cruel, but I am indifferent.
xx, f.
Liudmila is a collaborative project by Brussels-based artist Milda Januševičiūtė and Helsinki-based artist Miša Skalskis. Their work spans various media, from music and video works to sculpture and performance, echoing broad thematic affinities and emotional expressions. Liudmila’s practice explores how external forces, such as hobbyist cultures, club scenes, and subcultural aesthetics, shape identities. Through iconic, mass-produced forms and popular culture tropes, they examine the intersection of identity, consumerism, and collective memory.
Liudmila takes an anxious look at the relationship between desire and reality, the enchantments of capitalism and mass culture, and their deceptive promises. Active since 2019, the duo has exhibited in Finland (ARS22 Opening), the Baltics (KIM, CAC Contemporary Art Center Vilnius, Editorial, Baltic Triennial, ArtVilnius, VGW), Poland (MOCAK), Italy (60th Venice Biennale opening), and the UK (Cell Projects).
