Envy6011 is excited to present new works by George Watson. Filial continues Watson’s interest in early New Zealand settler culture, colonial architecture and the generational implications these have to Māori, their land and Watson’s own personal history and identity. Filial includes a single-channel projection, sculpture and digital collage works.
George Watson is a New Zealand artist based in Turanganui-a-Kiwa, Gisborne, with Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Mutunga whakapapa and Moriori hokopapa. George graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2016 and in 2019 George was awarded funding to complete the Maumaus Independent Study Programme in Lisbon, Portugal.

Contemporary Gallery (2022), the group exhibition Pūmanawa at Hoea in Gisborne, the sculptural work Humi in Te Ara I whiti as part of the Te Tairawhiti Arts Festival (2021), a collaboration with Abigail Aroha Jensen, Pūtahitanga Kura curated by Bridget Riggir-Cuddy for The Lightship (2021), the group show They Covered the House in Stories, curated by Amy Weng for Te Tuhi (2021), and another collaboration with Abigail Aroha Jensen, Manawa i te Kāniwha curated by Tyson Campbell for Artspace Aotearoa (2021), Eternal Girlhood of the Settler State, presented by May Fair Art Fair in collaboration with Tyson Campbell (2020).
