Cruising
Cruising took place on M/S Mariella on the Baltic Sea between Stockholm and Helsinki in March 2017. Within the duration of the 40 hour journey, 16 artists were invited to use both private and public spaces on the cruise ship as settings for the artworks in an attempt to portray the feeling of being at sea, being on board, being trapped or being free.
For 32 years this floating hotel has been on the go, serving as many as 2500 passengers every day all year around. It is an affordable way to travel, for business and for pleasure. Entering this non-place environment enables the passenger to relax and forget about the troubles that the mainland may hold. The cruise ship is also a place of contradictions. Heaven and/or hell. Heavy waves and dark waters. A slight breeze and an endless horizon.
