Gajek´s mix A Basement of Our Own is a postdigital sonic fiction about the 1990s in East Germany. Matti Gajek, born 1984 in Schwerin, presents montages and collages that cut through layers, fractures and dissolutions of a world in radical transition: hardcore and polish jazz, the sound of GDR-DIY-speakers and 1990s consumer technology, ghosts from the archives of two states and the promises of digital beginnings. A Basement of our Own is the musical hauntology of a land with brandnew postal codes, the beta-canon of a time that thought itself arrived at the end of history. In the basement of this world Gajek finds abandoned artifacts, discarded thoughts and unsettled affairs, things which were meant to be forgotten and which – perhaps for that reason – keep returning.
